Gum Grafting in Boca Raton

Gum Grafting in Boca Raton

That twinge when cold water hits a tooth, or the sense that a tooth looks longer than it used to, is often the first clue that gum tissue has pulled back. Receding gums rarely hurt at first, which is why so many people in Boca Raton live with them for years before asking questions. Gum grafting is the procedure we use to rebuild that lost tissue, protect the root surfaces underneath, and keep small problems from turning into loose teeth and bone loss later on.

Gum grafting is a periodontal procedure that adds healthy tissue to areas where the gums have thinned or receded. Depending on the situation, grafting material may come from the roof of your mouth or from a donor source. The new tissue is secured over the exposed root and, as it heals, it integrates with your existing gums to form a thicker, more durable band of protection around the tooth.

Recession happens for many reasons. Gum disease is a common cause, but so are aggressive brushing habits, clenching and grinding, teeth that sit outside the natural arch, thin tissue you inherited, and years of normal wear. Once the root is exposed, it has no enamel to shield it, so sensitivity, decay at the gumline, and continued bone loss all become more likely. Grafting addresses the cause of that exposure rather than simply covering up the symptom, which is why it remains a cornerstone of periodontal care in our office.

Most people who come to us for grafting fall into a few recognizable groups. Some have one or two teeth with noticeable recession and want to stop it before it spreads. Others have widespread recession tied to periodontal disease, which we treat first with gum disease therapy so grafting happens on a stable foundation. We also see patients who are bothered by the look of uneven, receding gums and want a more balanced smile line.

You may be a good candidate for gum grafting if you notice any of the following:

  • Sensitivity to cold, air, or brushing along the gumline
  • Teeth that appear longer, or visible notches and dark root surfaces
  • Gums that look thin, tender, or that bleed easily
  • Recession that has visibly progressed over the past year or two
  • A need for sturdier tissue before or alongside implants, bone grafting, or crown lengthening

Because we are a periodontal office with a board-certified periodontist on staff, we evaluate the whole picture: tissue thickness, bite forces, bone levels, brushing technique, and whether other treatment should come first or at the same time. We accept patients without a referral, so Boca Raton residents can schedule an evaluation directly with us rather than waiting for a hand-off from another office.

What to Expect During and After Your Procedure

Treatment begins with a thorough exam and a conversation about what you've noticed and what concerns you most. We measure recession, check for active gum disease, and map out which teeth need coverage. From there we explain the grafting approach we recommend, how many visits it will take, and how it fits with any other care you may need, such as ridge augmentation, bone grafting, or implant placement.

The procedure itself is done with the area fully numbed. We prepare the site, place and secure the graft, and give you written aftercare instructions before you leave. Most patients plan on a few days of taking it easy — soft foods, no brushing directly on the surgical site, and avoiding anything that tugs at the healing tissue. We'll see you back to check the graft and remove sutures if needed, and we'll fine-tune your home care so the new tissue holds. Ongoing periodontal maintenance is the single best way to protect the result, and for implant patients we provide implant maintenance as part of that long-term plan.
