Bone Grafting in Deerfield Beach

Bone Grafting in Deerfield Beach

A tooth has been missing for a few years, maybe longer. You've finally decided to replace it with an implant, and the first thing you hear is that the bone in that spot has thinned out. It's a common moment for our Deerfield Beach patients, and it isn't bad news — it simply means the foundation needs rebuilding before anything can be anchored into it. That rebuilding is what bone grafting does, and it's one of the procedures we perform most often in our office.

Jawbone is living tissue, and it depends on stimulation from tooth roots to keep its shape and density. When a tooth is lost, extracted, or damaged by advanced gum disease, the bone that used to support it begins to shrink. Over months and years, the ridge narrows and flattens. You may notice a sunken look along the jaw, neighboring teeth drifting, or a denture that no longer sits the way it once did.

Bone grafting places grafting material into the deficient area so your body can build new, healthy bone around and through it. Over the following months, that material is gradually replaced by your own bone, creating a stable base. We use grafting in several situations: preserving a socket right after an extraction so the site doesn't collapse, rebuilding width or height before an implant goes in, and ridge augmentation when a larger section of the jaw needs to be restored. We also combine grafting with periodontal regeneration when gum disease has eaten away at the bone surrounding teeth we're trying to save.

Most people who come to us for grafting fall into one of a few groups. Some had a tooth removed long ago and never replaced it. Some are being treated for periodontal disease and need the supporting bone rebuilt. Others are planning dental implants — single implants, implant-supported bridges, or full-arch options like All-on-4 and All-on-6 — and the scans show there isn't enough bone yet to place them predictably.

Deerfield Beach patients can come to us directly; no referral is required. We examine the site, review imaging, and talk honestly about whether grafting is needed, how much, and what it will allow you to do afterward. Healthy gum tissue and controlled periodontal disease matter here, so if active infection is present, we treat that first. Our board-certified periodontist handles these cases, and because grafting, implant placement, gum grafting, and crown lengthening are all done here, your care stays under one roof instead of bouncing between offices.

What the Procedure and Recovery Look Like

Grafting is usually a short, focused appointment. We numb the area thoroughly, make a small opening in the gum tissue, clean and prepare the site, and place the grafting material. A protective membrane often goes over the top to keep the material contained while it heals, and the tissue is closed with sutures. Many sockets grafted at the time of extraction take only a few extra minutes beyond the extraction itself.

Here's what Deerfield Beach patients can generally expect:

  • Mild swelling and soreness for the first few days, managed with cold compresses and the medication instructions we give you
  • Soft foods for a short period, avoiding chewing directly on the graft site
  • Gentle cleaning around the area, with specific guidance on brushing and rinsing
  • No smoking or vigorous rinsing during early healing, since both can disturb the graft
  • A healing window of several months before implant placement, depending on the size of the graft

We schedule follow-up visits to check the site and confirm the bone is maturing as expected. When the graft is ready, we move forward with implant placement, and later with implant maintenance to keep the surrounding tissue healthy for the long haul. Our on-site lab helps us keep restorative steps moving efficiently once that stage arrives.

Scheduling, Payment, and Getting Started

We're a fee-for-service, out-of-network practice and do not take insurance, which means our fees and treatment plans come directly from us without third-party restrictions on what we recommend. For patients with specialist coverage, we file claims as a Specialist on your behalf so you can pursue reimbursement from your plan. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we go over costs with you before treatment begins so there are no surprises.

If you're in Deerfield Beach and have been told you need bone before an implant — or you've been putting off replacing a tooth and want to know what's still possible — call us to arrange an evaluation. We'll look at the site, explain your options plainly, and help you decide what makes sense.
