Bone Grafting in Delray Beach

A tooth that's been missing for a few years, a molar extracted long ago, a denture that no longer fits the way it used to — these are the situations that bring many Delray Beach patients into our office asking about implants, only to learn there isn't quite enough bone left to hold one. That's not a dead end. Bone grafting is the step that rebuilds the foundation, and for most people it's a straightforward, predictable part of getting back to a complete, functioning bite.
Jawbone is living tissue, and it depends on the stimulation of tooth roots to maintain its volume. When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone that once surrounded it begins to shrink — a process called resorption. Over months and years, the ridge narrows and flattens. Gum disease accelerates the same problem by destroying bone around teeth that are still in place.
Bone grafting adds grafting material to the deficient area so your body can grow new, solid bone in its place. Over a healing period, your own bone cells migrate into the graft and gradually replace it, leaving behind a ridge dense enough to anchor a dental implant. We also perform ridge augmentation, which rebuilds the width and height of a jaw ridge that has collapsed, and periodontal regeneration, which targets bone lost to gum disease around natural teeth.
Delray Beach patients come to us for grafting in a range of situations: preserving the socket at the time of an extraction so the site stays strong, rebuilding a single-tooth site before an implant, or preparing both arches for full arch treatment such as All-on-4, All-on-6, or All-on-X implants.
You may be a candidate if you've lost teeth, have been told your bone is too thin for implants, have advanced gum disease, or are facing an extraction and want to protect the site before it collapses. Grafting is also commonly recommended ahead of implant-supported bridges and implant-supported dentures, where the bone has to carry a larger restoration.
The evaluation is the deciding factor. We examine your gums, assess bone levels, and look at the specific site in relation to your overall treatment goals. If active gum disease is present, we treat it first — placing a graft into infected tissue doesn't work. Because we are a periodontal practice with a board-certified periodontist on staff, bone and gum health are the center of what we do rather than an add-on, and you do not need a referral from another dentist to be seen.
- Creates enough bone volume to support dental implants
- Preserves the shape of the jaw and facial structure after tooth loss
- Protects an extraction site from collapsing in the months after surgery
- Supports stable, long-term results for full mouth and full arch implant treatment
- Can be combined with gum grafting or crown lengthening when the soft tissue also needs attention
What the Procedure and Recovery Involve
Grafting is done in our office under local anesthesia. We make a small opening in the gum tissue, clean and prepare the site, place the grafting material, and often cover it with a protective membrane before closing with sutures. A socket preservation graft at the time of an extraction usually adds only a short amount of time to the appointment. Larger ridge augmentation cases take longer and may be staged.
Afterward, expect some swelling and tenderness for a few days, managed with ice, rest, and the medication instructions we provide. You'll eat soft foods and avoid disturbing the site while the tissue closes. Healing beneath the surface takes longer — typically several months before the new bone is mature enough for implant placement. We schedule follow-up visits to confirm the graft is integrating as planned. If you already have implants, our implant maintenance appointments keep the surrounding bone and gum tissue healthy over the long term.
