A tooth has been missing for a few years, and now the plan is to replace it with an implant. The scan comes back and the ridge where that tooth once sat has narrowed and flattened — not enough height, not enough width, not quite enough to anchor an implant securely. This is one of the most common moments we meet patients, and it is rarely a setback. It usually just means we rebuild the foundation first.

Bone grafting is a procedure that adds volume and density to the jaw so it can support a dental implant, hold a tooth in place, or restore the natural contour of the ridge. When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone that once held its roots no longer receives the daily stimulation of chewing, and the body gradually resorbs it. Advanced gum disease can do the same thing from a different direction, breaking down the bone around teeth that are still present. Grafting places material in the deficient area so that your own bone can grow into and replace it over time.

We use grafting in several very different situations. Sometimes it is a small, preventive step placed at the time of an extraction to preserve the socket so an implant can be placed later without complication. Sometimes it is ridge augmentation, rebuilding a jaw that has narrowed over years of wear so that a full-width implant can be seated properly. In cases of periodontal regeneration, grafting helps restore bone lost to gum disease around teeth we are working to save. And for patients considering All-on-4, All-on-6, or full-arch implant treatment, grafting can create the stable base that a complete restoration depends on.

Most people who need a graft are simply people who waited — and that is not a judgment, it is just biology. If you have had a tooth missing for a year or more, have worn a removable denture for a long stretch, have been told elsewhere that you "don't have enough bone for implants," or are being treated for moderate to advanced gum disease, you may be a candidate. Having a board-certified periodontist on staff means these cases are evaluated by someone who focuses specifically on the bone and soft tissue that support teeth, rather than treated as an afterthought to another procedure.

Candidacy depends on your overall health, the condition of your gums, and how much bone is missing and where. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and active infection all influence healing, so we talk about them honestly before we plan anything. We also talk about timing. In some cases a graft and an implant can be placed in the same visit; in others, the graft needs several months to mature before implant placement. We would rather tell you that up front than rush a foundation that has to last decades. You are welcome to come directly to us for an evaluation — we accept patients without a referral from Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Highland Beach, and Delray Beach.

Healing, Aftercare, and What Results Look Like

Recovery from a graft is generally more manageable than patients expect. Swelling and tenderness in the first few days are normal, and we give you specific instructions on diet, rinsing, and protecting the site while the earliest healing happens. Soft foods, careful hygiene around the area, and avoiding anything that disturbs the graft make the biggest difference in those first weeks.

The longer part of the process is quiet and invisible. Over several months, your body remodels the graft material into living bone. We monitor that progress with follow-up visits and imaging before moving to the next stage of treatment. When restoration follows, our on-site dental lab allows closer coordination between the surgical result and the final prosthetic, and our implant maintenance program keeps the result healthy long after the work is finished.

Payment and Planning Your Treatment

We are an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and do not take insurance, which allows us to plan treatment around what your case actually requires rather than around plan limitations. We welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we believe you should know the full scope and sequence of your treatment before you commit to it.

  • A clear written treatment plan covering each phase, from grafting through final restoration

Bone loss is common, correctable, and easier to address sooner than later. If an implant has been ruled out for you before, or you simply want to know where your jaw stands, we would be glad to take a look and walk you through your options. Call our office to schedule a consultation.
