Bleeding when you brush, gums that look longer than they used to, a persistent bad taste, or a tooth that suddenly feels loose — these are the signs that bring most people to our office, and they rarely go away on their own. Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place, and it tends to progress quietly. The good news is that it responds well to care, and the sooner we address it, the more of your natural support structure we can preserve.

Gum disease begins as inflammation along the gumline, where plaque and hardened tartar collect in spaces a toothbrush cannot reach. In its earliest form, the tissue is irritated and bleeds easily. Left alone, the infection works deeper, forming pockets between the gum and the tooth root. Bone begins to recede, gums pull away, and teeth that were once solid start to shift or loosen. Because the process is usually painless until it is advanced, many people are surprised to learn how much support has already been lost.

Treatment is built around removing the bacteria and giving the tissue a clean, healthy surface to reattach to. That means a careful assessment first — measuring pocket depths, evaluating bone levels, and looking at how your bite and your daily hygiene habits are contributing. From there, care may involve deep cleaning below the gumline, and in more advanced cases, procedures such as periodontal regeneration to help rebuild lost support, gum grafting to cover exposed roots and reinforce thin tissue, or bone grafting where the foundation needs rebuilding. As a periodontal practice with a board-certified periodontist on staff, this is the work we do every day.

People arrive at gum treatment from very different starting points. Some have been told by a general dentist that their pockets are deepening and it is time to see a specialist. Others notice recession and sensitivity along the roots, or dislike how long their teeth are beginning to look. Some come to us after a tooth has already been lost and want to understand whether implants are realistic — and whether the surrounding gum and bone can support them. We also see patients who have had implants placed elsewhere and need ongoing implant maintenance, since the tissue around an implant can become infected much the way it does around a natural tooth.

You do not need a referral to be seen here. If you suspect something is wrong, you can call us directly. What matters most for a good outcome is timing and honesty about your routine — whether you smoke, how often you floss, whether you grind, and whether conditions like diabetes are part of your health picture. We would rather build a plan around your real life than an ideal one.

Healing, Results, and Keeping Gum Disease From Returning

After treatment, gums are often tender for a few days and may feel different as inflammation subsides — tissue tightens, bleeding stops, and teeth can feel cleaner than they have in years. Some recession may become more visible once swelling resolves, which is normal and sometimes addressed later with gum grafting or cosmetic gum contouring if the appearance bothers you. We will give you specific instructions for rinsing, eating, and brushing during the healing window, and we will see you back to confirm the tissue is responding.

Gum disease is a chronic condition, which means the goal is lasting control rather than a one-time fix. Maintenance visits on a schedule we set together are the single biggest factor in keeping results stable. Between visits, consistent home care does the rest.

  • Keeping scheduled periodontal maintenance appointments rather than stretching them out
  • Cleaning between teeth daily, using the tools we recommend for your spacing
  • Telling us promptly about new bleeding, swelling, or a tooth that feels different
  • Managing health conditions and habits that make gum tissue harder to heal

Costs, Payment, and Getting Started

We are an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and do not participate with insurance plans. We do file claims as a specialist office, which can help patients with out-of-network periodontal benefits seek reimbursement directly from their carrier. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we will walk you through the full cost of your recommended care before anything begins, so there are no surprises.

Patients come to us from Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Highland Beach, and Delray Beach, often with questions they have been putting off asking. If your gums have been bleeding or something simply does not feel right, we would be glad to take a look and tell you honestly what we see. Call us to schedule a consultation — we will go from there, together.
